Is this normal?

First, it’s feats of strength Friday, and here is a video for your entertainment. I bend a steel carriage bolt and my daughter is especially cute here.

Earlier this week one of my personal training clients had asked “Is this normal?”

I said “Well what is normal really?”

What she was referring to was that she had noticeable increases in strength within the session. Being someone who was already in pretty good shape before she even came to me she wasn’t used to the way I do things and seemed to enjoy the strength that she had already attained.

What I was referring to was what people normally refer to as “normal” can also be considered “ordinary”.

My wife and I are a match.com success story. The opening line in my dating profile was “if you are looking for someone ordinary, keep looking because I’m not him”. This was also followed by the next line which said “Why settle for ordinary and boring when you can have extraordinary and fun?”

And I think that’s an issue that a lot of people face.

They settle.

They settle in their health by thinking they can’t do any better. They settle by thinking that what they are doing is “good enough”.

When I set out to be a personal trainer, I was always looking for better and better ways of training both myself as well as my personal training clients. That led me to the community of steel bending strongmen where I learned a bit of what I was (and what we are) truly capable of.

My first mentor in this was New Jersey’s Superman, the late Greg Matonick. It was the slogan for his gym that I adopted and put on my door.

His other slogan was “What’s impossible for you is normal to us.”

With the one I was training this morning, she surprised herself. I wasn’t surprised because I knew she could do it. I know what she is capable of, and she is learning that too.

You won’t know what you are truly capable of, unless you set out to find out.

If you need my help with this I have a free one-week trial membership available where you can test my methods out for yourself. Send me a text at 973 476 5328.

Landscaping Spike – Feats of Strength Friday

Hey there!

In addition to being a personal trainer with a personal training studio on Main Street in Boonton I’m also a modern-day performing strongman…or at least I was until the recent pandemic had shut everything down.

If you are unfamiliar with what that is, in essence, I perform feats of strength as part of a live show. Sort of like a modern-day version of the sort of thing you would see in music halls, vaudeville theaters (like the Darress theater which is next to the Library across the street) and circuses that were commonplace during the turn of the century.

That’s also why I have those frying pans in the window, those were done in shows and I used them to decorate in a way my wife won’t let me do in my house. The chain of nails is another thing, though I did them for the sake of decorating.

Now since there are no gatherings of any sort and we still don’t really know what’s going to happen with schools (where I often perform), I figured I’d take my skillset onto youtube as part of a series called Feats of Strength Friday. Each Friday I would perform one of my feats…at least until things return to normal and I take the stage again.

Here is a recent one of me bending a landscaping spike. The kind used for securing railroad ties.

Even though this wasn’t the most recent one, I wanted to post it because my daughter Aurora is in it…and she’s cute 🙂

I’ll start posting them here as I do them.

The Eric Moss Fitness Personal Training Studio is reopening with these procedures

Hey Boonton!

I’m so happy to be able to tell you that I’ve reopened my personal training studio on Main Street in Boonton. And yes, I personally believe that life needs to get back to some kind of normalcy, but with proper precautions in order to prevent the continued spread of COVID-19.

Here are some of the changes that are being made.

  • Small group personal training has temporarily changed to one on one personal training (family members living in the same household can still train as a small group)
  • To accommodate only having one personal training client in the studio at a time, the available hours are extended temporarily. See the personal training schedule page to check availability.
  • Personal training clients will have to sanitize their hands upon both entry and exit of the personal training studio.
  • Equipment used is wiped down with certified disinfectants in between clients.
  • Personal training clients will have to wait outside for the previous client to leave and to provide adequate buffer time for disinfection.
  • The grey mat (with the felt surface) will not be used during this time. The blue mat will be (I can disinfect the blue mat with time to dry).
  • I wear a mask or personal protective equipment and try to maintain a safe distance as much as I can.
  • For plate loaded equipment (barbells, dumbbells, and the vertical pull machine) I will take care of setting all that up for you. This is done to minimize the unnecessary touching of surfaces.
  • Clients are asked not to put any equipment away. This is done so that I know what was used so that I can disinfect it.
  • The personal training free trial membership is available again in a limited capacity. This is scheduled on a first come first serve basis and due to everything being 1 on 1, scheduling is limited to accommodate time to disinfect.  If you are interested in the trial send me a text at 973 476 5328.
  • The Amazing 12 Body Transformation Program will not be available to people who aren’t currently signed up for it, at least until restrictions allow more than one person in the studio at a time. Others interested can be put onto a waiting list with current active members given priority.
  • Clients are not allowed to touch the iPad and are asked to minimize touching of things they aren’t using.
  • This should be common sense, but if you feel like you may have COVID or were recently exposed to someone with COVID, or simply don’t want to take the risk…just stay home. It is better to err on the side of safety.  I’ll write your customized program for you to do at home until it’s safe to train in person again (active members only).

This pandemic has shown the importance of what I do here which is making people healthy and strong. I’m happy to have returned and life heading back to normal. We buckle our seatbelts when getting into a car, not because we are likely to get into an accident, we do it just in case.

Please let’s not ruin this by not taking it seriously.
