Traveling as a performing Strongman, come with me to my gig at the Mohegan Sun

As you probably already know that in addition to being a personal trainer with a studio in Boonton NJ, I’m also a professional performing strongman and motivational speaker.

Recently a friend of mine on facebook had reached out to me to ask if I had ever done an assembly for a school that was near him and showed me a feat of strength that truth be told, looked like one of mine but I legit can’t remember. Having done over 100 presentations many of whom were for schools, they start to blend together in my memory after awhile and having recently getten into watching some of the vlogs out there I decided to start my own to chronicle my experiences as well as provide a way to stay connected with the people who see me.

It’s something I wished I had done when I first started my journey with my first mentor the late great Greg Matonick all those years ago. So come along for the ride and don’t forget to like, subscribe and hit that notification bell.

re: Gillette toxic masculinity and my thoughts

I consider myself fairly manly. No, I don’t watch football or have a beard, but I do legitimately break chains with my chest and bend steel with my strength. I have a world record in bending steel as a matter of fact so I don’t think that anyone is going to call me feminine any time soon.

Watch this video, and you’ll see that I’m not a sissy.

No, I wouldn’t be caught dead in skinny jeans, most of my shirts are either from bands I follow or have funny slogans printed on them. I have an allergic reaction to boy bands and The Real Housewives of wherever. I enjoy drinking beer, whiskey, watching chase scenes, heavy metal music and I like pretty girls.

I like pretty girls so much I married one and helped give birth to another (technically my wife gave birth, but I enjoyed contributing). I’m not afraid of spiders and am proud to be a man.

So when I heard about this commercial of Gillette shaming toxic masculinity and other guys saying “time to switch brands” and that sort of thing I wanted to see what’s up.

A friend of mine once quipped that I was the only one she knew that could both give out man cards and take them away so I thought I might weigh in on the subject.

Here are my thoughts. It’s not shaming men, not real men anyways. The things that shame men are those sitcoms that portray men as incapable of doing anything without their wives. You know the ones, the one that has the “man” of the household that is incapable of cooking a halfway decent meal or changing a diaper. The man that is too dumb to know how to take care of his family.

No, what Gillette is shaming are the @$$holes that give the good ones of us a bad name. You know, the bullies, the rapists, the abusers, the predators, the jerks and the creeps that get away with their behavior because nobody else manned up and stood up for what’s right.

Just now I went to a website called “The Art of Manliness” and saw a banner they have up that said “Strength in Virtue and Virtue in Strength”. To me that is what being a real man is about. Physical strength, as well as strength of character. My first steel-bending strongman mentor New Jersey’s Superman the late and great, Greg Matonick cautioned me to be “an all-around strongman”. To basically use my strength for the good and benefit of those around me.

A real man should make the women around him feel safe by his presence. The should not feel like they’re in danger. The women should draw strength just from being in proximity to him by thinking “everything is ok because he is here”. Not “I hope I don’t get raped or groped, or talked over.” like she’s an idiot or piece of meat.

Aggression is one of those traits that is considered masculine, and to a point it also is kind of shamed in the video. I’m a believer that it shouldn’t be shunned, but it should instead be cultivated in a positive direction. A “man” that fights for what’s right is “a hero”, while a man who pushes those around him down is just a dickhead.

my girls and their man

Yes, I am a man. I’m also a brother to a sister, a son to a mother, a husband to a wife, and a father to a daughter. Right now I’m trying to raise my daughter to be tough, fearless and not to take the kind of crap that the men previously might have gotten away with. I’m also raising her quite simply be a good person, and I expect those of you with sons to do the same. Raise your sons to be good people. I don’t think it’s too much to ask or expect.

This video is quite simply a call for us to be better men, plain and simple. And since I have no plans of growing a beard, Gillette, I will not stop using your razors.

Life is for living, fitness should make it better.

So earlier today, I saw a challenge going around facebook about reposting the first picture you ever posted to Facebook, and a current one to see how much you’ve changed. It just so happened that the first picture I ever posted was one of my “after” pics from a body transformation I had done way back in 2007. I was a man on the mission back then and the mission was get ripped even if I had to be like a Spartan to do it.

this was the one I had posted
And this is the most recent one.

It got me thinking about how we change and evolve. You see I’m not as ripped as I was back then, but I’m not that far away either, but I live a lot more freely now. I train for all around strength and to break free from limitations.

And yeah, being a personal trainer and professional performing strongman I am expected to look a certain way and I’m also not going to lie, I enjoy looking good, but not at the expense of living.

For comparison purposes I wanted to scroll back on my phone to find a pic where I’m not wearing a shirt to show you what I currently look like.

I’m the one in the grey swimsuit holding the cute little girl

As you can probably tell, I’m not far away from that look, without the perfect lighting, fake tan and posing oil. No “dad bod” for this guy, but no living like a monk either. I had pasta earlier, and am sipping some bourbon as I write this article. Tomorrow after my strongman show, I’ll have beer with friends, eating non-organic food that has more grams of fats and carbs than I care to look up.

You see, life and training are all about balance. Let’s pretend that there are two sides of you. The one that wants to eat, drink and be merry, and the one that wants to look like a superhero and is willing to sleep in the gym and eat nothing but boiled chicken and spinach. Think of it as a balancing scale.

If the scale is out of balance, more weight needs to be put where it’s lacking.

Let’s say you’ve gained a ton of weight and you know that losing it will improve your life, by all means, improve it by putting more focus into it.

Diet and exercise can work wonders for improving people’s lives. Diet and exercise has provided way more success stories than any pill, multi-level marketing supplement or body wrap has ever done either…just saying.

However, it can also get out of control too. I’ve seen this happen with a number of people within the fitness industry who God forbid ever ate something non-organic and with high fructose corn syrup. Ironically also today I saw a facebook post by Thomas Plummer, an influencer in the fitness industry who had written about new years resolutions and I just had to steal this, but that’s common place in our industry anyways.

A pint and a laugh with friends are sometimes far more important than another perfect meal in a plastic bowl perfectly keto balanced.

Thomas Plummer

Don’t you mean another perfect meal in a glass bowl perfectly keto balanced so it doesn’t raise your estrogen??? I kid of course.

Because what we do in the personal training studio or what you do in your gym is supposed to make your life better. Everything we seek to achieve in our lives, careers and health should be to enrich and improve quality of living, plain and simple.

And yes, your strength and your health are very important, but equally as important is the fact that life is for living.

But of course what happens next is up to you and if you got value out of this please share it with someone that needs to read it.
