As worthy a reason to get strong as any

Sometime this morning one of my personal training clients had tagged me in a post on Facebook. We chat about all sorts of different things from current events to Batman to Star Wars to professional wrestling to my favorite band Judas Priest to his favorite band Guns N Roses and all the things involved with being a dad (we both have daughters born within months of each other).

And as often as things come up on Facebook, he doesn’t normally tag me in things but in this case, I could see exactly why he chose this one.

First watch the video.

To me, it highlights one of the more important things about training, which is it’s about more than having six-pack abs or whatever. It’s about being able to live life on your own terms, free of the restrictions of not being strong enough to do the things that you want to do.

In this case it’s a grandfather being able to pick up his grand daughter.

As for my guy, he actually had referred his wife to me for the same exact reason. She wanted to get stronger to be able to lift up her daughter overhead. The timing was perfect because I just uploaded her personal training success story video literally last night.

What’s not mentioned in the video is about the carry over to things beyond physical strength. Strength training builds confidence. The confidence to get unstuck and pursue what makes you happy.

In this case, Dot found herself unfulfilled by her work and left a job she had worked in the majority of her adult life, getting a new job with better pay and better working conditions.

Able to lift her kid overhead when she previously couldn’t and believing in her own capabilities. That’s a success story, and that is a good reason to train.

If you are interested in training with me to improve your life and get unstuck, I have a free trial at my personal training studio in Boonton. Just text me at 973 476 5328 and I can check my schedule to see when I’m available.

Office Art, Strongman Style – Feats of Strength Friday

So if you’ve been following me for any time, or if you’ve poked around my website like the nosy person you are (I’m kidding, it’s actually a trait of the well informed to do their research on a person before hiring them…which is one of the reasons I post these things) you may know that in addition to being a personal trainer with a personal training studio on Main Street in Boonton, I’m also a modern day steel bending strongman.

My wife calls me useless around the house. Some people call me an artist, but I’m not one in the traditional sense since I use soap. I bend steel into artistic pieces I call scrollptures. Is it art? Who’s to say? I just start bending it and it comes into a life of it’s own, each one being different from the last.

So recently an acupuncturist friend of mine had reopened in a new location in Boonton and wanted a piece to help decorate her new acupuncture office in Boonton. I’m rather pleased with the way it came out.

Hand bent steel scrollpture

Each of these is bent without the use of heat or tools. Most of the time I just use clear coat to prevent rust, and because the places where the steel bends a coating flakes off and gives it character. In this case, I painted it to represent the colors associated with her brand.

You can actually see how I bent the steel in this video.

If you are interested in something like this, let me know. I don’t really push these things but they are available when someone wants to order one. If you want one before the holiday’s you better put the request in soon.

Or if you are interested in training with a steel bending strongman I have a free trial available. Just text me at 973 476 5328 and let me know when you want to get started.

Running to lose weight, sure but not necessary

I’m not sure how this topic recently came up. It was probably one of the many conversations I have in my personal training studio, but alas, I can’t remember who I was talking to. It probably wasn’t one of my older personal training clients since I’ve explained this numerous times…not that that has ever stopped me before.

I just remember making note of it.

Right now as of writing this, we are just getting into the holiday shopping season. I haven’t decorated, but I did get some Black Friday shopping done. Right now fitness and being in shape is probably not on the top of people’s minds but it’ll come up in the new year. Especially since 2020 was a rough one.

So when people review their fitness goals, they’ll probably say something to the effect of “I need to lose weight.” then they’ll come up with a plan along the lines of “I’ll run around the block a few times, then a few times more.”

And yes running can help you lose weight, in fact it’s a component of the Amazing 12 Body Transformation program (I’m hoping to be able to run that again by March 2021 when I can train more than one personal training client at a time).

It can be used yes, but there are better ways of doing it. With Amazing 12 it’s only a component because all the other boxes (weight training, metabolic conditioning) have been checked off.

Now do you need to run to get great results? Nope not even close, in fact most of my personal training clients don’t run. Most of them only run to quite simply be better at running.

It’s the old SAID principle. SAID stands for Specific Adaptations to Imposed Demands or in other words you get good at what you repeatedly do. To be a good runner, you have to run, to be a good lacrosse player, you have to play lacrosse. To be good at bending steel you have to bend steel.

Now if you want to lose weight, get on a sound nutrition program and lift weights. When it comes to weight loss, diet is the more important component. The weight training will help support it, and signal your body it needs to keep muscle tone to prevent it from burning that up.

I try to get people to think of them as being separate, even though they work very well together.

If you need my help with this, I have a free trial membership at my personal training studio on Main Street in Boonton. Though I don’t much available in the mornings, I have some in the afternoons. Just text me at 973 476 5328 and introduce yourself to see what time slots I have available if you are interested.
